Solar-Powered Landfills

It’s a true case of one man’s trash being another man’s treasure. A team of innovative minds from waste company Republic Services partnered with Carlisle Energy Solutions to develop the world's largest solar energy cap and the first use of the technology as a fully permitted landfill final closure system. Producing for energyNow!, Shawn Shepard wanted to capture the immensity of the project. Instead of the obligatory talking head in the office, he filmed representatives from Republic and Carlisle on site. This not only infused the interviews with energy, but it also formed an engaging visual aesthetic. It was hot day, which made filming outdoors on a large shadeless geomembrane quite challenging. Still, the sacrifice in comfort was well worth it. The footage was edited into an in-depth story that shows an incredibly creative use of renewable energy.
